Newton Police Department

Nicholas J. Lanser, 21, of Pella, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 5:43 p.m. July 11 after police were called to Hy-Vee for a theft. The man was accused of leaving the store without paying for several items. The total value of items was $12.16. Lanser was released and issued a citation to appear in court.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Office

• Chad A. Emary, 35, of Des Moines, was charged with two counts of assault on persons in certain occupations, provide false identification information, possession of controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia at 11:36 p.m. July 8 after officers stopped a vehicle for failing to use headlights in the 5700 block of Highway 117 South in Colfax. Emary was uncooperative and did not provide a license, registration or insurance, which was later found to be with him though he said it was at home. Emary tried driving away from the traffic stop, then struggled with two officers as they tried to take him into custody. During the struggle, both officers sustained injuries, one obtained a bruise to his right hand and the other sustained a cut to his left knee. Emary was arrested. During the arrest, deputies found three syringes and four baggies with white residue inside. Emary was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Broc R. Pearson, 21, of Newton, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of controlled substance, marijuana at 9:49 p.m. July 7 after Pearson was stopped for speeding in the 700 block of Highway 14 South. There was a smell of marijuana coming from his vehicle. Pearson told the officer he had marijuana in a hydration bag along with drug paraphernalia. Pearson was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Ryan A. Mason, 37, of Newton, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia at 10:22 p.m. July 6 after Mason was stopped for an equipment violation in the 1100 block of Highway 14 South. Mason told the officer there was a marijuana pipe in the vehicle and he gave it to the officer. Mason was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Joshua A. Allen, 31, of Baxter, was charged with public intoxication, second offense, at 2 a.m. after Allen was allegedly involved in a verbal altercation with his girlfriend while walking down the street in Baxter. Allen told the officer he had been drinking at the beer garden during Baxter Fun Days. Allen had blood shot, watery eyes, slurred his words and stumbled several times. Allen refused a breath test. Allen was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
