Choir Camp
5 to 7:30 p.m. July 17-20 — Iowa Youth Chorus is offering a children’s choral camp at the Newton Public Library Monday through Thursday. Instruction will be provided by Jane Johnson, director of the Newton Children’s Choir. The camp will meet every evening and supper will be provided. A short public performance will be held at the conclusion of the camp at 7 p.m. Thursday. The camp is for children ages 7 to 11 and registration is required to attend. Friday Flicks
1 p.m. July 21 — Join us on Friday afternoons for a family-friendly movie in the library meeting room. Bring your own popcorn, beverages are provided. Seating is on the floor, and attendees may bring a pillow if they like. All movies have a G or PG rating. Library policy is that children age 10 and under must have an adult guardian present in the building. The movie for Friday, July 21st is “Stuart Little,” 85 minutes.
Newton History at
Your Fingertips
The Newton Public Library is introducing a new online archive of Jasper County history. The archive contains hundreds of historic books, photographs and documents; all available through the library website. To view the archive, go to the library website, www.newton.lib.ia.us and click on the Research tab at the top of the page. New materials are added every month. Blank Park Zoo
Animal Show and Tell
10:30 a.m. July 24 — Join an educator from the Blank Park Zoo to learn about the amazing ways animals build. From underground burrows to nests high in the trees, we’ll talk about the different dwellings animals can create. Children will also get to meet several small zoo animals. This event will take place on the library lawn, weather permitting.
Stargaze at the Library
8 p.m. July 24 — Join us after-hours as the Des Moines Astronomical Society leads a night sky viewing. Learn how to spot constellations and planets while viewing the night sky through a high powered telescope. This presentation will also discuss the upcoming total solar eclipse. Children are welcome to attend with an adult. Call 641-792-4108 to register.
Understanding the Opioid Epidemic in Iowa
6 p.m. July 31 — Hayley Nemmers from Employee and Family Resources offers an inside look at the nation’s opioid epidemic. This informative program will discuss current drug trends, signs of abuse and prevention efforts in your own community. Contact the library at 641-792-4108 with questions.
The Life and Times of
Laura Ingalls Wilder
6 p.m. Aug. 3 — Humanities Iowa Speaker and historical interpreter, Sarah Uthoff, presents a program on famous author and pioneer, Laura Ingalls Wilder. Attendees are invited to dress in period costume and bring their questions about Wilder and pioneer life. All ages are welcome at this free event. Questions? Call 641-792-4108.
