Dining in Newton

Since moving to Newton, I have received a number of restaurant suggestions. I try not to eat out all the time. It’s a money-saver, but it’s a little bit of a habit. I like to cook and try new recipes sure, but I grew up in town without a restaurant, well not one that lasted longer than a few years. The only thing that seems to stay open in my hometown is the bar and the Pronto gas station. Therefore, going out to eat involved at least 20 minute trip to a neighboring city.

Now that I live within walking distance, or just a short drive, the temptation is greater to explore the delicious options around town. I have found several favorites among the list of suggestions. I couldn’t possibly highlight them all, but here are a few I enjoy.

Midtown Cafe

The diner is within walking distance of the office and makes for a nice lunch place to enjoy a home cooked meal without me having to do the work. I especially love the first Wednesday of the month, Navajo Taco Day.

When my coworker first mentioned the dish to me, I admit I had no idea what it was. It’s not something I had come across before in my dining experiences. I was immediately intrigued. My coworker and I made the short walk to the diner for lunch, and I have to say I was impressed. I knew I would be returning, and I have, for nearly every first Wednesday of the month since.

PJ’s Deli

I love a good sandwich, and PJ’s is the perfect place to go. Also within walking distance from work, it is a nice lunch spot when I don’t feel like spending my lunch break at home.

I have tried the super cheese, rustic roast beef, the Reuben and the feast, just to name a few. The cheese soup on Fridays is delicious as well. Just typing this makes me crave the fresh sandwich from the deli at the courthouse mall.

Moo’s BBQ

I’ll admit, I don’t go as often as I used to since it moved from the downtown square. It was a nice place to stop for dinner on my nightly walk. However, it is still a favorite. Barbecue will always be a weakness for me and any pulled pork sandwich usually has my attention.

I try to have something new every time I visit. The Barnyard Sandwich is enough for two meals with all of the beef, pork and chicken all on one bun. The ribs are good too, so saucy and meaty. I’ve been told that the flatbread taco is delicious. I can’t wait for my next trip to try even more.

Giovanni’s Pizza

It seems most towns have its local pizzaria. It took me longer than I care to admit to finally get out to Giovanni’s for a slice. It’s been a favorite ever since.

I have never really been a fan of the Canadian bacon and sauerkraut pizza, but my sister is. When I took her there, she said it was the best she’s ever had. I tried it, and I have to admit, I am starting to like it now, all thanks to Giovanni’s. Next time I’m craving pizza I know where I’m going to go.

Newton offers many unique dining experiences. I have enjoyed far more than I have listed here, but simply didn’t have room to mention them all. I encourage you to check out some of the fine local establishments that go beyond the national and regional restaurant chains. You won’t be sorry you did.
