Cardinal baseball team edges out Scarlets

DES MOINES — Newton High’s Cardinals turned the tables on their season-long pattern and their hosts the Des Moines East Scarlets on Thursday.

The Scarlets (21-17) pushed out to a 4-1 lead after three innings in the non-conference game. It’s a pattern the Cardinals have followed a lot this season, falling behind and not able to rally back.

Newton did rally late with three runs in the sixth to forge a 4-4 tie, The Cardinals produced the go-ahead run the top of the seventh, shut down the Scarlets with two on in the bottom of the inning and won 5-4.

“This was a team victory. Logan Wolfe and Ben Leal threw well on the mound for us and we played solid defense behind them,” Newton head coach Dustin Brisel said. “We had quality at-bats and the guys ran the bases well, taking an extra base when East bobbled the ball.”

Both teams scored a run in the first inning.

Newton’s run was produced when Jaron Roush singled to lead off the game and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Stanton. Brennen Dodd singled, but on the play he scrambled for second base on the throw-in. Roush scored on the throw.

East broke the 1-1 tie on a three-run home run by Calob Dicks in the third inning.

“East has a shorter field. The kid got a hold of a pitch and drove it over the right field fence,” Brisel said. “After that, we made the plays to keep the game within reach.”

It was Roush starting things off again for the Cardinals in the sixth inning, but he was out on a fielder’s choice by Stanton. Dodd kept the line moving with a base hit and Trey Vanderlaan drew a walk to load the bases.

Trevor Ergenbright’s ground-out drove in a run. Dodd stole home for another run which was followed by an RBI single from Ryan Barr. Vanderlaan scored the tying run on a Scarlet error.

All knotted at 4-all going into the seventh inning, Newton continued to hit the ball. Blayden Rhone singled and Keith Steinbach went in to run for Rhone. Roush put down a sacrifice bunt then Stanton doubled in at the go-ahead run.

Logan Wolfe started on the hill for Newton, going five innings. He gave up four runs on four hits and five walks. He struck out four. Ben Leal picked up the win in relief, pitching two innings of scoreless baseball. He allowed one hit and walked two.

Des Moines East had two runners on with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. A sacrifice bunt accounted for the first out then Leal recorded his only strikeout and he coaxed a grounder for the final out.

Newton (8-25) plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Class 3A No. 4 Saydel.
