Pitch count violation forces C-M baseball to forfeit final SICL game

A violation to the state’s mandated new pitching count policy forced the Colfax-Mingo baseball team to forfeit its Wednesday night win over North Mahaska on Thursday.

The Tigerhawks won the game 9-1 and the win would have clinched a share of the South Iowa Cedar League title. Instead, Colfax-Mingo finishes one game back of Lynnville-Sully in the final standings because junior Jonathan Jacobs threw too many pitches over a two-day period.

Jacobs threw 18 pitches to get the save in a win over BGM on Tuesday. He then came back to toss 106 pitches in the complete-game win over North Mahaska on Wednesday.

That two-day total of 124 violates the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s new policy, which states that a player may not throw more than 110 pitches over the course of two consecutive days.

Colfax-Mingo’s 9-1 victory over the Warhawks now goes down as a forfeited loss in the standings, which means Lynnville-Sully is the outright conference champion at 14-2. Colfax-Mingo ends its conference season at 13-3.
