Ranked Toreadors roll past Cardinals

It could have been a preview to a possible Class 4A softball regional championship game since Newton and 4A 13th-ranked Boone are in the same regional.

Newton High’s Cardinals walked off their home field Tuesday knowing they have work to do before that possible match up. Boone’s Toreadors dominated the Cardinals on the field, winning 12-0 in four innings.

“These girls are a lot better than what they played liked tonight,” Newton head coach Kristina McNew said. “We’re back in action Wednesday.”

The Toreadors were up 6-0 when they plated six runs in the top of the fourth. They held the Cardinals in check and scoreless in the bottom of the inning to close out the nonconference contest.

Anna Coyle started in the pitching circle for Newton, pitching three innings. Peyton Maher pitched the fourth inning. Newton had one hit, a single by Taylor Ryan.

To see Boone again in the Class 4A Region 8 championship game on July 11, the Cardinals will have to win twice in regional action. They play at home July 6 against Knoxville then if they win the Cardinals would face 4A third-ranked Winterset.

Before the postseason, Newton has Little Hawkeye Conference showdowns with two eighth-ranked teams. Newton is 10-8 in LHC play.

Newton (16-15) hosts Class 2A No. 8 Pella Christian on Senior Night Wednesday at Berg Middle School field. The varsity game is at 7:30 p.m.

The Cardinals wrap up their regular season with a varsity doubleheader at 6 p.m. Monday at Class 5A eighth-ranked Indianola.
