Lake Red Rock Programs for June 29-July 5

There’s always something happening at Lake Red Rock! Check out these upcoming activities:

• Thursday — Nature Playtime at 10 a.m., Playscape

Nature is full of great adventures and new things to see, hear, smell, and touch! Young children and their families can join us for short activities to investigate the world. Activities each week will have a different theme and may include stories, hikes, songs or crafts.

• Friday — Paddle to Hickory Ridge (per-registration required, youth must be at least 16 yrs. old and accompanied by adult) from 6 to 8 p.m., Whitebreast Boat Ramp

Join a park ranger for a leisurely paddle to the Hickory Ridge Wilderness Campground. Bring your own kayak or borrow one from us free of charge! A limited number of kayaks are available, so per-registration is needed if you want to borrow one. (Must be at least 16 years old to borrow kayaks for the activity, and adults must accompany minors.) Activity may be canceled if inclement weather/ lake conditions. Contact the Corps office at 641-828-7522 to preregister.

• Friday — Pond Exploration at 7 p.m., Playscape

Go “mucking” at one of the lake area’s wetlands! Dip nets and tubs will be available for you to try and catch some of the critters swimming and crawling in and around the area. Mucking can be messy, so please wear old shoes and clothes.

• Saturday — A Pirate's Treasure: Basic Compass at 10 a.m.,
Playscape

Aarrgh, Matey! Pretend you’re a pirate and search for buried treasure. How will we find the loot? Using a map and compass, of course! Learn the basics and join in the search.

• Saturday — Let’s Go Paddling! from 1 to 3 p.m., Roberts Creek

Enjoy the chance to experience both canoeing and kayaking in the same day. Give one or both types of watercraft a try and see how much fun paddling can be! (You must be at least 10 years old to use kayaks. Life jackets will be provided. Programs may be canceled if inclement weather and wind conditions.)

• Saturday — Delightful Decomposers at 1 p.m., Playscape

It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it. Worms, insects, fungi and bacteria all work hard to keep our planet clean. Play with worms, help make compost and discover the important role these often-overlooked organisms play in maintaining our ecosystems.

• Saturday — Geocaching at 7 p.m., Howell Station Landing

You’re never too old for hide-and-seek: have some fun and give geocaching a try. This sport uses the technology of GPS (Global Positioning System) to hunt for caches hidden in an area. Bring your own GPS unit or borrow one from us. Learn some of the basics, then try it on your own anywhere you travel.

• July 5 — Kids’ Craft Day from 1 to 3 p.m., Visitor Center

Got creative kids? Bring your young artists to enjoy make-and take nature craft activities!

Programs are free of charge. Outdoor activities may be canceled if raining or inclement weather. For more information, please contact the Corps of Engineers at 641-828-7522 or via email at lakeredrock@usace.army.mil
