Newton Municipal Band to present patriotic concert

In honor of the Fourth of July, the Newton Municipal Band will present a concert of patriotic music at its third concert of the season, this Thursday night.

The concert, a part of the Newton Parks and Recreation Summer Concerts in the Park Series, will take place at 7 p.m. at Maytag Bowl in Maytag Park. Back on the podium for the second time this season, the band will be directed by Jim Beerends, director of bands at Newton Community High School. Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be Fred Chabot.

To honor the birth of our nation, Beerends has chosen several of our country’s favorite patriotic pieces. Included will be “Americans We,” “Mancini!” “America, the Beautiful” “Alkali Ike Rag,” “The Washington Post March,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “Armed Forces Salute” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” As always, the concert will begin with our national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.”

What better way to jump-start your 4th of July weekend, than with a concert of stirring patriotic tunes at the bowl in beautiful Maytag Park? Bring lawn chairs or a blanket, bring an old-fashioned picnic supper.
