Mustang softball knocks off No. 9 West Marshall

STATE CENTER — Senior Katie Vande Wall hit a home run in the fifth inning to ignite the Prairie City-Monroe softball team on Thursday, and the Mustangs used that momentum to claim a come-from-behind win over Class 3A No. 9 West Marshall.

Vande Wall’s third home run of the season closed the gap to 2-1 in the fifth inning, and the Mustangs rallied with five runs in the seventh inning to win the nonconference game.

Senior Kayla Jennings allowed three earned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. Jennings surrendered a home run to Brooke Snider in the first inning but allowed just two singles the rest of the way. She is now 10-6 on the season with 115 strikeouts.

It was the second straight win for PCM (13-9). The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for West Marshall (22-3). The Trojans are just 5-3 since starting the season 17-0.

Jennings also had one hit and scored one run at the plate for the Mustangs. Senior Jayci Vos had two hits and one RBI, and seniors Courtney Bridges and Abby Waddell each had an RBI.

PCM plays in the Pella Christian tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday in Pella.
