Newton softball hosts 4A regional opener

CMB has revised 2A regional bracket

Newton High’s softball team will host its opener in the Class 4A postseason.

The Cardinals were assigned to 4A Region 8 when the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the regional softball pairings for 4A Thursday. Newton has played or will play all but two of the teams in the bracket.

Newton takes on Knoxville at 7 p.m. July 6 at Newton’s Berg Middle School field.

The two played in this season’s opener with Newton winning 10-3.

The winner of that game will play against 4A third-ranked Winterset in a semifinal contest. It is at 7 p.m. July 8 at Winterset. Newton does not have Winterset on its regular-season schedule.

In the other half of the 4A Region 8 bracket, fellow Little Hawkeye Conference member Dallas Center-Grimes hosts Mason City at 7 p.m. July 6. The Cardinals went 1-2 against DCG this year, and does not have Mason City on their schedule.

The winner of the DCG and Mason City game will play at No. 13-ranked Boone at 7 p.m. on July 8 in a semifinal game. Newton is scheduled to play Boone at home on June 27.

The 4A Region 8 championship game is at 7 p.m. July 11 at the highest remaining seeded team’s home field. The regional champion advances to the 2017 Class 4A State Softball Tournament, July 17-21, in Fort Dodge.

The IGHSAU announced Wednesday afternoon several revisions to the 2A and 3A regional pairings. One revised bracket involved Collins-Maxwell/Baxter.

CMB is now in the 2A Region 7 tournament. The 2A third-ranked Raiders host the winner of a July 3 game between Woodward-Granger and Panorama at 7 p.m. July 5 in Collins.

In the other quarterfinal game in CMB’s half of the regional bracket pits Des Moines Christian against Pleasantville on July 5. The winner of the two quarterfinal games play at 7 p.m. July 7 at Collins in a semifinal matchup.

Class 2A 11th-ranked Logan-Magnolia received the other first-round bye in the 2A Region 7 tournament. It awaits the winner of Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto and ACGC, which play at 7 p.m. July 3, for a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. July 5 in Logan.

Fifteenth-ranked IKM-Manning hosts Missouri Valley at 7 p.m. July 5 in Irwin for the other quarterfinal game.

The quarterfinal game winners meet at 7 p.m. July 7 in Logan.

The 2A Region 7 championship game is at 7 p.m. July 10 at the highest remaining seeded team’s home field. The regional champion advances to the 2017 Class 2A State Softball Tournament, July 17-21, in Fort Dodge.
