Colfax-Mingo falls out of SICL lead after loss to Warriors

VICTOR — The Colfax-Mingo softball team had six more hits than HLV on Wednesday during a South Iowa Cedar League game.

Unfortunately for the Tigerhawks, three HLV hits resulted in five runs, and the Warriors handed Class 1A No. 11 Colfax-Mingo a 6-2 road loss.

HLV completed the season sweep of the Tigerhawks this season, and the loss knocked Colfax-Mingo out of first place in the SICL.

Senior Amy Russell had three hits, and juniors Ries Wilson and Rhiannon Haley both had two hits, but the Tigerhawks couldn’t get the clutch hits with runners on base.

HLV had just three hits, but one was a two-out, two-run single in the second and another was a three-run triple in the fifth.

Colfax-Mingo got a lead-off single from Wilson in the first and a lead-off double by sophomore Colbee Cunningham in the second but couldn’t score.

Sophomore Delaney Underwood drew an RBI bases-loaded walk to cut the HLV to 2-1. The Tigerhawks stranded the bases loaded in the fifth and scored only one run in the seventh after two of the first two batters reached on singles.

Colfax-Mingo left nine runners on base in the loss.

Haley had an RBI groundout in the frame, but the Warriors finished the deal to improve to 8-8 on the season and 7-6 in the SICL.

Russell fell to 11-3 on the season despite striking out 10. She allowed six earned runs on three hits and three walks. Emma Cheney, who had the three-run triple in the fifth, earned the win to improve to 8-5 on the year.

The loss snapped Colfax-Mingo’s seven-game winning streak. The Tigerhawks fell to 16-8 overall and 9-4 in the SICL.

No. 13 Sigourney and No. 14 Belle Plaine both won to remain in first place in the conference standings, while Lynnville-Sully’s win over Montezuma pulled the 12th-ranked Hawks into a second-place tie with Colfax-Mingo. North Mahaska also is tied for second at 9-4 in conference play.

Colfax-Mingo hosts BGM at 6 p.m. Thursday in Colfax. It plays in the Marshalltown Bobcat Classic on Friday and Saturday.
