Hallie V. “Verlin” Carter, 96, of Monroe, died Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at his home in Monroe.

As per Verlin’s wishes he has been cremated and there are no services scheduled.

Hallie Verlin Carter, the son of Lawrence and Francis Ann McCoy Carter, was born April 25, 1921, in Percy. He served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II, from July of 1942 to February of 1946.

On March 31, 1946, Verlin was united in marriage with Lois Jean Long in Newton. They were blessed with a daughter, Billie, and two sons, Donnie and Blake. Verlin was a lifelong farmer. He had also worked for the Iowa DOT for 10 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 363 in Monroe and a life member of the DAV. Verlin was a lifetime horse and mule rider. Verlin always had a horse around but the last 15 years he raised mules. He was a lifelong resident of Jasper County, living in the Monroe area.

Those left to honor his memory are his daughter, Billie Hearshman of Carlisle; grandson, Cameron (Rachael) Hearshman of Hartford; his sister, Lola Bullington of Carlisle; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Lois in 2008; and his two sons, Don in 1976, and Blake in 1974; a sister and brother-in-law, Gerdena and George Waddle.
