Cameron Dlouhy admitted when he walked onto Eversman Field Saturday evening, he really wanted to have his glove on and head right to the mound.

Dlouhy had to stop at the first-base line where he was inducted in the Newton High School Baseball of Fame. Dlouhy, who played for the Cardinals from 2004 to 2007, and John Schermerhorn, who played from 1997 to 2000, were the 2017 NHS Baseball Hall of Fame inductees.

Dlouhy, who lives in Ankeny, was able to attend Saturday night’s ceremony between games at the 2017 Newton Varsity Baseball Tournament. Schermerhorn lives in Las Vegas, Nev., and wasn’t able to attend.

Both former Cardinals pitched for Newton. Schermerhorn has 127 career strikeouts and Dlouhy racked up 125 career strikeouts.

Dlouhy had 130 innings pitched in his Newton career and Schermerhorn had 128 innings pitched. Schermerhorn has 12 pitching wins for his career and Dlouhy recorded three saves in the 2007 season.

“I was shocked and excited when I got the call about being inducted into the hall of fame,” Dlouhy said Saturday. “I feel privileged to be a part of this great program and Newton is such a great town.”

Dlouhy was an all-conference selection as a senior, when he had 19 doubles and drove in 40 runs. He ended up with 75 career RBIs and scored 63 runs in his career. In his 328 career at bats, Dlouhy had 104 hits and 34 doubles.

Dlouhy played baseball since he was 5-years-old. He was a three-sport athlete at Newton High playing football, soccer and baseball all four years. Dlouhy was a captain in all three sports as a senior. He also tried basketball and wrestling each for one year.

“My favorite memories of those years are about just hanging out with the guys I played ball with. Always before practice, we played pickle and catch and just messing around as we built the camaraderie of the team” Dlouhy said.

“Tonight brings back a lot of great memories, especially the great group of guys I played Newton baseball with.”

Dlouhy graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor of science degree in marketing. He is a sales and marketing manger with Farm Bureau in West Des Moines. He has two sons, Tryce, 7, and Breckyn, 5.

Schermerhorn had seven career saves as a pitcher with four coming in the 1998 season. He had 151 at bats that season also and 149 at bats in 2000. Schermerhorn was an all-conference player as a senior in 2000, when he hit seven home runs.

Schermerhorn finished with 502 career at bats with 166 hits, 13 career home runs and 36 career doubles. He drove in 108 runs in his career and scored 105 runs.

Schermerhorn played football, baseball and competed in track at Newton High. He went on to play two years of baseball at Indian Hills Community College then played at Newman University. Schermerhorn played independent ball for the Sioux City Explorers.

Both inductee’s hall of fame signs were hung on the outside of the right field fence at Eversman Field following the ceremony.
