Hawk baseball wins, softball stumbles against Tri-County

SULLY — Tri-County’s Trojan girls knocked off their second Class 1A ranked softball team in South Iowa Cedar League action on Friday. The Trojans upended 1A 12th-ranked Lynnville-Sully, 10-1, at Sully.

Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team rallied from an 8-6 deficit to win 20-8 over the Trojan baseball squad in five innings. The Hawk boys scored 14 runs in the fourth frame.

Tri-County (8-7) scored eight runs in the fourth inning against the Hawk girls to go up 10-0. Lynnville-Sully (12-6) scored its run in the fifth.

The Hawk softball team is 8-3, tied for second in the SICL with Colfax-Mingo, which was beaten by Tri-County earlier this season. Sigourney is 9-2 in conference play.

Lynnville-Sully’s softball team plays at 6 p.m. on Monday against 1A 11th-ranked Colfax-Mingo (15-7) in Colfax.

The Trojan girls held the Hawks to three singles. Carson Fisk, Mallory Loftus and Kaleah Ehresman each had a single apiece.

Loftus and Fisk shared the pitching duties for Lynnville-Sully. They gave up nine hits and four walks. Loftus struck out two and Fisk had one strikeout.

In the baseball contest in Sully, the Hawks were up 6-2 after three innings as they scored four times in the second and two in the third. Tri-County had single runs in the first and third innings then plated six runs in the fourth.

Lynnville-Sully exploded for 14 runs in its half of the fourth inning. The winning pitcher was Josh Dunsbergen, who pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless and hitless baseball. He struck out three batters.

Elijah Collins worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on one hit and four walks and he had four strikeouts. Blaize Kuhlmann threw one-third of an inning, and allowed four runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out one.

Collins was 3-for-4 at the plate with two singles and a double. Corbin James was 3-for-3 with three base hits. Carson Dunsbergen and Rylan James had two singles apiece. Caden Dunsbergen and Bray Noun Harder had a single apiece.

The Hawk baseball team is 10-5 overall. It is 9-2 in SICL play and in second place. The Hawks hosts SICL-leading Colfax-Mingo (11-2, 11-1) at 6 p.m. on Monday in Sully.
