Mustangs score split of Saydel

DES MOINES — The Prairie City-Monroe baseball team was held to one hit in an 8-1 loss to the first-place Eagles on Friday night during Heart of Iowa Conference play.

PCM used six pitchers but still couldn’t slow down Saydel, which scored five of its runs in the first three innings. It was Saydel’s ninth straight win.

On the softball diamond, senior Abby Waddell blasted a grand slam to lead the Mustangs (11-8) to an 8-0 victory. It was Waddell’s first home run of the season.

No other information was available at presstime.

Sophomore Reed Worth had the only hit of the game for PCM, and he also walked once and scored the lone run.

The Mustangs walked eight times in the loss. Senior Braden Phifer and sophomore Brayton Van Dyke each walked twice.

Freshman Derek Brown (3-1) started on the mound and lost for the first time this season after surrendering one earned run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout in one inning. Van Dyke, Worth, sophomore Preston Van Wyk, junior Brady Fagen and freshman Dane Owens all pitched in relief.

Saydel senior Devin Porter improved his batting average to .536 after recording two hits, two runs, two RBIs, one walk and one stolen base. Nate Sepich was 4-for-4 at the plate, and TJ Stephenson improved to 6-0 on the mound after allowed no runs on no hits with strikeouts in five relief innings.

PCM hosts Collins-Maxwell/Baxter in HOIC play Monday. The Mustang softball team, which is 9-2 in conference play, hosts the Raiders (19-5 overall, 11-1 in the HOIC) at 7:30 p.m. in Monroe, while the baseball team hosts CMB (3-12, 2-9) at 5:15 p.m. in Prairie City.
