Hawk teams drop close contests with West Marshall

SULLY — Two heartbreaking non-conference losses at home for Lynnville-Sully’s baseball and softball teams came on Tuesday against visiting West Marshall.

West Marshall’s softball team came to Sully undefeated and ranked No 14 in Class 3A. Lynnville-Sully’s softball squad carried the No. 9 ranking in 1A but had four losses.

The Hawk girls and Trojan girls battled through four scoreless innings.

The Trojans scored a run in the fifth, but the Hawks answered with two runs in their half of the inning.

Each team plated a single run in the sixth inning. Lynnville-Sully was up 3-2 on West Marshall going into the seventh frame.

The Trojans broke through to score three runs, taking a 5-3 lead. The Hawks got a run in the bottom of the final inning before West Marshall halted the rally.

Mallory Loftus started and worked 5 2/3 innings against West Marshall. She gave up two runs on two hits and one walk and struck out three. Carson Fisk came on in relief in the sixth and took the loss. Fisk pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on two hits and striking out three.

Fisk led the Hawk offense, going 3-for-4 with three base hits and scored two runs. Loftus singled and doubled and Shiloh Cunningham had a single and a triple.

McKinley Conover and Janelle Rozendaal each had a base hit. Conover, Brenna Lanser, Caitlin Alberts and Korrine Jansen drove in a run apiece.

Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team clawed back from a 7-0 deficit against 2A West Marshall (12-3). The Hawks scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. They added a run in the seventh and had two runners on with one out, but the Trojans notched two strikeouts for a 7-6 win.

The Trojans had a four-run third inning highlighted by a two-run home run by Cody Mead.

A Lynnville-Sully error opened the door for the Trojans in the inning. West Marshall used three singles and a ground-rule double to plate three runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Lynnville-Sully took advantage of several miscues and pitching control problems by the Trojans in the fifth. Corbin James led off with a base-on-balls and Josh Dunsbergen reached on a dropped third strike and Caden Dunsbergen was hit by a pitch.

The Trojans committed three errors in the inning and two more walks issued helped Lynnville-Sully to score five runs. In the seventh inning, Tyler Van Zante hit a one-out base hit and moved to second on a wild pitch.

Bray Noun Harder reached on another Trojan error allowing Van Zante to score.

Rylan James singled then the Hawks’ next two batters struck out.

Van Zante was the losing pitcher for the Hawks. He worked six innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits and two walks and he struck out seven. Blaize Kuhlmann pitched one inning of no-hit, scoreless baseball. He issued two walks and struck out one.

Hitting a single each for Lynnville-Sully were Elijah Collins, Van Zante, Noun Harder and Ryan James.

Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team is 8-5 overall. The Lynnville-Sully softball team is 11-5 overall. Both Hawk squads are 7-2 in South Iowa Cedar League play.

Lynnville-Sully’s teams are on the road Wednesday in SICL action.

The Hawks play in 5 p.m. games against host English Valleys at North English.
