PCM baseball splits two in East Marshall tournament

GILMAN — The Prairie City-Monroe baseball team collected 17 hits and walked 10 times during a 21-10 victory over Cardinal of Eldon in the opening game of the East Marshall tournament Saturday.

The victory extended the Mustangs’ win streak to five games. The host Mustangs ended that streak later in the day with a 13-11 victory. In the other game of the day, Cardinal defeated East Marshall 10-9.

Against Cardinal, PCM (9-5) pulled ahead for good with a 10-run fourth inning. Cardinal (5-6) scored eight of its 10 runs in the first three innings.

Five Mustangs had at least two hits at the plate.

Sophomore Reed Worth led the Mustangs with three hits, three runs, three RBIs, four steals and two walks. Sophomore Brayton Van Dyke collected three hits, three runs, two RBIs and two steals. Van Dyke laced his second home run of the season, too.

Senior Noah Clark also had three hits, as well as two runs, two RBIs and three stolen bases. Sophomore Preston Van Wyk added two hits, three runs, two RBIs and three steals. The Mustangs had 14 steals in the win.

Senior Braden Phifer, who started on the mound against East Marshall, had two hits and five RBIs at the plate against Cardinal.

Worth started on the mound against Cardinal but did not factor into the decision after allowing four earned runs on five hits with four walks in 2 2/3 innings.

Clark got the win in relief after allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.

Freshman Derek Brown and Van Dyke both logged one inning of relief and neither allowed an earned run. They combined to surrender one hit and three walks with three strikeouts.

PCM, which defeated East Marshall 12-0 earlier this season, fell behind the host Mustangs 7-3 after two innings and 10-5 after four innings. PCM rallied with three runs in the final two innings but East Marshall prevailed by two.

Worth collected three more hits at the plate for PCM, which finished with 13 hits in the game. Worth also had three runs and two doubles.

Van Dyke hit his third homer of the season and finished with two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Junior Noah Henkenius tallied two hits, three runs and two RBIs, Phifer and Clark each had two hits and Van Wyk had two steals.

Phifer took the loss on the mound, allowing five earned runs on six hits with two walks in two innings. Van Wyk threw the next three innings and surrendered three runs on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Clark tossed the final inning and allowed three hits and one walk with two strikeouts in one inning.

PCM plays Greene County at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Jefferson. The Mustangs defeated the Rams, 1-0, in Prairie City in the season opener on May 22.
