Hawk softball wins, baseball loses against Iowa Valley

SULLY — With a win and a loss on Monday, Lynnville-Sully’s softball and baseball teams are each 7-2 in South Iowa Cedar League conference play. The Hawk squads hosted Iowa Valley in Sully.

Lynnville-Sully’s Class 1A ninth-ranked softball team needed four innings to record a 13-1 win over Iowa Valley. A late rally by the Hawk baseball team fell short in an 8-5 loss to Iowa Valley.

Mallory Loftus threw a three-hitter for the Hawk girls. She had one strikeout. Iowa Valley scored a run in the first inning then was held in check.

Lynnville-Sully’s softball team steadily built its lead with three runs in each of the first two innings, a four-run third and another three runs coming across home plate in the fourth frame. The Hawks used a 15-hit attack to deliver the win.

Brenna Lanser led the way with a double and a triple. She drove in four runs. Carson Fisk had a single and a double, swiped three of the team’s nine stolen bases and scored three runs.

Caitlin Alberts, Korinne Jansen and Kaleah Ehresman each had two singles. Alberts had two RBIs. Taylor Maadam and Janelle Rozendaal hit a double apiece. Hitting a single each were McKinley Conover, Loftus and Shiloh Cunningham.

Iowa Valley’s baseball team jumped out to an 8-1 lead by the end four innings. The Hawks added a run in the fifth and scored three times in the sixth, but that was all.

Josh Dunsbergen pitched four innings and took the loss. He gave up eight runs on eight hits and four walks and he struck out three. Elijah Collins worked three scoreless innings, allowing two hits.

Rylan James went 3-for-4 at the plate with two base hits and a double. Carson Dunsbergen, Corbin James and Josh Dunsbergen each had two singles.

Elijah Collins, Tyler Van Zante and Bray Noun Harder had a single apiece.

The Hawk softball team is 11-4 overall and the baseball team is 8-4. They step out of SICL play Tuesday for home non-conference games with West Marshall. Both games start at 6 p.m. in Sully.
