Tigerhawks cruise past Plainsmen in SICL sweep

BELLE PLAINE — Senior Amy Russell had four hits at the plate and struck out seven with no walks in the circle and junior Ries Wilson added three hits, two runs and two RBIs as the Class 1A No. 7 Colfax-Mingo softball team downed No. 10 Belle Plaine, 7-1, during South Iowa Cedar League play.

The Tigerhawks cranked out 13 hits in the win. They are now 8-4 overall and 5-2 in the SICL. Belle Plaine fell to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Colfax-Mingo led 4-1 after two innings and then tacked on three more runs to win easily. Belle Plaine had two hits at the plate against Russell (6-1).

Russell was 4-for-4 at the plate. In the circle, she shut down the Plainsmen after allowing her only earned run in the first inning.

Senior Alivia Haley had two hits and scored twice, and sophomore Mackensie Brown chipped in two hits, one walk and one run scored.

Colfax-Mingo hosts Tri-County at 6 p.m. Thursday in Colfax.

COLFAX — Junior Jonathan Jacobs struck out eight and allowed just four hits in seven complete innings, and the Tigerhawks improved to 7-1 in SICL play.

The Tigerhawks scored all five of their runs in the first two innings.

Senior Jimmy Camp, junior Jarod Nichols and freshman Trystin Ross all had two hits to lead the offense. Sophomore Zarek Hill had one hit, one walk, one steal and scored twice.

The Tigerhawk boys play at 6 p.m. Friday at Tri-County.
