Eagles down Tigerhawks in battle of ranked teams

PELLA — Colfax-Mingo’s softball team couldn’t slow down Class 2A No. 10 Pella Christian during an 8-5 loss in non-conference action Tuesday.

The Eagles scored at least one run in all six of their at-bats and improved to 8-1 on the season. It was Pella Christian’s sixth straight win.

The 1A No. 7 Tigerhawks led 1-0 following an RBI single by junior Rhiannon Haley in the top of the first inning. Junior Ries Wilson singled and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on the Haley hit.

Pella Christian took its first lead of the game when it plated two runs in the bottom of the first. Elizabeth Van Manen hit a two-run homer.

Colfax-Mingo scored two runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 3-all. Haley reached on an error, sophomore Mackensie Brown singled and sophomore Colbee Cunningham doubled to bring in a run. Sophomore Delaney Underwood singled in Brown to tie the game.

Pella Christian regained the lead in the bottom of the third, but Colfax-Mingo tied it at 4-all after senior Alivia Haley doubled and then scored on a fielder’s indifference.

Pella Christian jumped back in front with a run in the fourth and then pulled away with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Colfax-Mingo got its fifth run in the sixth when Alivia Haley doubled and scored on Rhiannon Haley’s single.

Colfax-Mingo out-hit the Eagles 11-10, but the Tigerhawks were plagued by four errors.
