Cardinals knock off No. 1 Indians

Emily Valtman put a charge into a pitch for a two-run home run to put Newton High’s Cardinals up 2-0 over Class 4A top-ranked Oskaloosa. The visiting Indians scored a run in the second and that was it in Monday’s Little Hawkeye Conference softball game.

Newton upended the No. 1 Indians, 2-1. It pushed its LHC record to 3-1 and improved to 7-4 overall.

Anna Coyle allowed four hits in the game, walked one and struck out one. She is 5-1 in the pitching circle for Newton.

“Anna pitched a great game,” Newton head coach Kristian McNew said.

With one gone in the first inning, Bailey Davis singled for the Cardinals. Valtman powered her sixth home run of the season, which leads the team.

Audrey Lucas singled and doubled for the Cardinals. Taylor Ryan hit two singles. Karley Leiker and Davis had a base hit apiece.

Newton’s varsity plays at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference game against Lynnville-Sully in Sully. The junior varsity game is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Cardinals host Pella at 6 p.m. Wednesday for a varsity doubleheader in LHC play.
