Colfax-Mingo splits two with SICL foe North Mahaska

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo senior Amy Russell had two hits and drove in one of the Tigerhawks’ three runs at the plate and fanned 11 in the circle during a South Iowa Cedar League victory over North Mahaska on Friday.

Russell was 2-for-3 with a run and a triple offensively. She surrendered just two hits and walked two in the circle during the Tigerhawks’ 3-0 win.

Colfax-Mingo jumped out to a lead with a single run in the first inning and then went up 3-0 with two more runs in the fifth.

The Class 1A No. 7 Tigerhawks are now 7-2 overall and 4-1 in SICL play. North Mahaska (4-6) dropped to 3-3 in SICL play.

Joining Russell with two hits at the plate was junior Rhiannon Haley. She added a run, a walk and two stolen bases.

Senior Alivia Haley, junior Ries Wilson and sophomores Delaney Underwood, Mackensie Brown and Colbee Cunningham all had one hit.

Wilson scored a run and stole a base, Brown and Cunningham each had an RBI and Alivia Haley stole a base.

Through nine games, Russell is batting .533 and Rhiannon Haley is hitting .462.

The Tigerhawks host No. 9 Sigourney for an SICL showdown at 6 p.m. Monday in Colfax.

NEW SHARON — North Mahaska jumped out to an early lead, and the Tigerhawks never recovered during an SICL game Friday.

Colfax-Mingo lost for the first time on the season after falling behind 4-0 after two innings.

The Tigerhawks got on the board with a run in the fourth and then added another run in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.

Six different players had one hit for the Tigerhawks (5-2, 5-1). Sophomore Zarek Hill and junior Misha Seebeck both singled and stole a base, senior Adam Teed singled and scored a run and freshman Trinity Schroeder had a hit and an RBI. Freshman Trystin Ross and junior Alex Lewis had the other hits.

Lewis took the loss on the mound. He surrendered four runs but only one was earned as the Tigerhawks committed three errors.

Lewis threw 91 pitches to get through six innings and allowed six hits and struck out eight while walking none.

Dylan Shipley had a hit and two RBIs to lead North Mahaska (3-5, 3-3).

Jacob Sherburne threw 111 pitches and earned the win on the mound.
