Reynolds tied for 10th at 4A state golf tournament

MARSHALLTOWN — Newton High junior Alayna Reynolds opened her first-ever state golf tournament with a 92. When all golfers were in the clubhouse on the first day of action, Reynolds is in the running for an individual medal.

She played the first 18 holes of the 2017 Iowa Class 4A Girls’ State Golf Tournament Tuesday on Marshalltown’s Elmwood Country Club golf course. The top 10 individuals are awarded medals at the end of play on Wednesday.

Reynolds is tied for 10th after the first day of action. She and Keri Herr of Mount Pleasant have 92s.

Defending 4A champion Sarah Nacos leads the field with a 78.

Grinnell’s Bella Amador-Lacson sits in second place on the leaderboard with an 84 and Humboldt’s Brooke Anderson is third at 85. Shooting an 88 apiece, Greene County Rachael Danielson and Maquoketa’s Taylor Thede are tied for fourth.

Dubuque Wahlert’s Anna Jensen tallied an 89 for sixth and Grinnell’s Maddie Schrack is seventh with a 90. Claire Ausman of Nevada and Mary Edwards of Dubuque Wahlert are tied for eighth with 91s.

Reynolds began with three bogeys and three double bogeys before recording her lone birdie of the day on her seventh hole. She birdied Elmwood’s par-5 No. 8. Reynolds, who teed off the tournament on No. 2, and ended her first nine holes with a par on No. 10.

Reynolds had a 45 for her first nine holes. On her back nine, Reynolds followed a double bogey and triple bogey with back-to-back pars on No. 13 and 14. She had a 47 on her second nine holes.

One shot back of Reynolds and Herr are Humboldt’s Avery Terwilliger and Creston’s Ashton Carter with 93s. Dubuque Wahlert has a three-shot lead over Humboldt in the team standings at 368 to 371. Grinnell is third with a 381.

Reynolds tees off on Elmwood’s No. 16 at 9 a.m. Wednesday for the final 18 holes of the state tournament. In her group are Danielson and Thede, who are tied for fourth.
