Joe Earlon Hodges, 86, of Newton, died Sunday, May 28, 2017, at Accura of Newton West. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 17 at the Haven Vineyard Church in Newton. Memorials in Joe’s name may be left at the church. The Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in handling the cremation.

Joe, the son of Floyd and Roxey (Newman) Hodges, was born April 18, 1931, in Warren Township in Poweshiek County. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954. Joe was united in marriage with Nyla Munson Nov. 6, 1954, in Unionville, Mo. Most of their life was spent in Newton. Joe worked as a police officer and later in the factory at the Maytag Company. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, UAW Local 997 and attended the Community Heights Alliance Church. Joe enjoyed mowing, camping and boating.

Those left to honor Joe’s memory are his wife, Nyla Hodges of Newton; children, Dixie Hodges (Tim Malone) of Otley and Danny (Connie) Hodges of Casa Grande, Ariz.; grandchildren, Amy (Cory) Orr, Christy (Todd) Friedman, Lacey (Jonathan) Randall, Paul Durbala and Cassandra Malone; 10 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Doug (Evelyn) Hodges and Cindy Hagen; and sister-in-law, Carol Hodges. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Larry Hodges.
