Russell powers sixth-ranked Tigerhawks to win over Thunder

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo senior Amy Russell had the team’s only hit, but it was a two-run home run in the first inning and that helped the Class 1A No. 6 Tigerhawks to a 3-1 home victory over Grand View Christian on Thursday.

Russell was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run in the game. It was her second homer of the season.

Russell also improved to 2-0 in the circle by allowing no earned runs on two hits and five walks against the Thunder.

Russell struck out 12.

Grand View Christian got within one in the sixth inning, but Colfax-Mingo (2-1) regained a two-run advantage when junior Rhiannon Haley was walked with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning.

Haley walked four times in the game.

Senior Alivia Haley walked three times and scored once. The Tigerhawks were walked 10 times in the game.

The Tigerhawks hit the road to play BGM in South Iowa Cedar League play at 6 p.m. Friday in Brooklyn.

Colfax-Mingo hosts 4A Pella at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Colfax.
