Tigerhawks collect split with SICL rival HLV

VICTOR — The Colfax-Mingo baseball team pieced together a trio of pitchers to earn its second straight win of the 2017 season Wednesday.

Sophomore Zarek Hill tossed four innings of relief to earn the win and junior Jonathan Jacobs got the save and had two RBIs at the plate during the Tigerhawks’ 4-2 victory over HLV during South Iowa Cedar League action.

Junior Alex Lewis started the game on the mound. He pitched two innings and fanned two batters. He also had a hit, a run and a stolen base on offense.

Hill’s relief appearance included three strikeouts. Both runs he allowed were unearned.

Jacobs struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh inning. He was 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored at the dish.

Junior Jarod Nichols also had a hit and an RBI.

Colfax-Mingo improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the SICL. HLV (1-1, 1-1) lost for the first time this season.

The Tigerhawks host BGM at 6 p.m. Friday in Colfax.

SOFTBALL

HLV 4, Colfax-Mingo 0

COLFAX — Two days after scoring 17 runs in the season-opening road at Lynnville-Sully, the Colfax-Mingo softball team was shut out in its home opener Wednesday.

HLV took advantage of three Tigerhawk errors during a 4-0 victory.

Colfax-Mingo only had five hits at the plate.

Junior Ries Wilson finished with two hits to lead the offense.

Sophomore Colbee Cunningham allowed four runs on eight hits in the circle. Only two of the four runs were earned, and she also had three strikeouts.

Both Wilson and Cunningham doubled at the plate.

HLV junior Emma Cheney tossed a shutout, allowing just five hits while striking out five.

The Tigerhawks return to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Grand View Christian in Colfax.

They play BGM at 6 p.m. Friday in Brooklyn.
