Norma Jean Northup, 87, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Vista Woods Care Center in Ottumwa.

Norma was the first born child of Thomas T. and Golda Dommer Northup in Ottumwa, Sept. 19, 1929. On Nov. 1, 1936, Norma and her family welcomed home her little brother, Jack L. Northup in Ottumwa.

Norma was a caring, loyal and happy sister, aunt, great aunt and friend. She worked at Ottumwa Regional Hospital for 30 plus years in the dietary department before retiring. After her retirement, Norma worked as a foster grandparent/para through the Ottumwa School District and as a product demonstrator through South Hy-Vee in Ottumwa. They were never just jobs to her. She was happy to meet new people and share in their lives.

During her 87 years in this life, she enjoyed quite a few activities including, bowling, ceramics, attending church, attending some of her great nephew’s sports and school programs, doing find-a-word puzzles, taking care of her pets and being with friends. She also got to welcome her great niece into the family in 2012 and had four years getting to know her.

Those left to remember Norma Jean are her niece, Janelle Darrah and husband, Don; her great-nephew, Jayce Darrah; great-niece, Jayla Darrah; and her former sister-in-law, Judy Copeland Northup Bandixen, all of Newton; as well as lots of friends.

Those preceding Norma in death were her parents; brother, Jack L. Northup of Newton, formerly of Ottumwa and Hutchinson, Kan.; and a niece, Jayla Northup in infancy.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 30 at Sinnott Funeral Home, 220 N. Court in Ottumwa. Burial will follow in Shaul Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 30 at Sinnott Funeral Home in Ottumwa. Memorials for Norma may be left at the funeral home directed to the family of Norma J. Northup.
