MAT team wins another state championship

The MAT Tumbling and Trampoline program had the exciting opportunity to host the 2017 Iowa USTA State Championships for Power Tumbling, Olympic Trampoline and Double Mini Trampoline at the Marshalltown High School Roundhouse on April 22 and 23.

The MAT Team had 75 athletes competing at the state championships event. The state championships is the only chance for athletes to qualify for the National Championships, which will be held in Madison, Wis. in June.

The roundhouse floor was full and buzzing both Saturday and Sunday as there were two trampolines and two double mini trampolines on Saturday, and two rod floors and one foam carpet floor on Sunday.

MAT is taking 64 athletes to Madison, Wis. for nationals. The MAT Team has taken first at Nationals the past two years and will be attempting an unprecedented three-pete.

In the team competition, MAT Tumbling/Trampoline took first place for Tumbling and Trampoline and is once again the Overall Top Team in Iowa. This year’s goal for the MAT team was to come and be dominant in competition at every level and every event. The MAT athletes stepped up to that challenge and had a phenomenal weekend.

MAT had 37 State Champions and 19 runner ups. MAT also had six high point winners. o be named high point winners, the athletes achieved the top score of anyone in their level, regardless of age. Those who achieved this include Mia Giannetto — high point winner beginner double mini and beginner trampoline; Kaisa Stanley — high point winner novice double mini; Giavanna Gast – high point winner intermediate double mini; Grace Fisher — high point winner sub advanced trampoline; Kyah Siegert — high point winner sub advanced tumbling.

This event brought in nearly 900 athletes and their families to the Marshalltown area. All competitors received trophies for their flight awards. Those who placed in the top 15 for their age group and level received a National Qualifier Ribbon. The state champion for the age group received these, plus a patch declaring them as state champion. Athletes competed against up to 50 other people in their respective level and age group and had to place in the Top 15 Overall to qualify to the National Championships.

Madison Kremer-Awes was nominated as Iowa Athlete of the Year. The Iowa Sportsmanship award was given to Giavanna Gast. Alexis Farrell was nominated for the Vickie Wilson Spirit Award. Chelsea Trotter was nominated for and received the Senior Scholarship. Stacey Slaven, USTA Elite National Team member, and USTA All-STAR Team members Joseph Rechtfertig, Mia Giannetto, Kyah Siegert, and Chelsea Trotter were all recognized during the ceremonies.
