4-H senior members receive local scholarships

Two Jasper County high school seniors recently were awarded 4-H scholarships.

This year’s recipients are both seniors at the Newton High School. They will each receive a $500 scholarship awarded by the Jasper County Youth Committee and Iowa State University Extension & Outreach of Jasper County.

Emily Miller is a 12-year-member of the Sherman Sunbeams 4-H Club. Emily has been very successful in the Ag & Natural Resource Division of 4-H, especially in the areas of horse and swine. She has been the Jasper County Fair Queen, and in 2015 was first runner up out of approximately 80 girls in the Iowa State Fair Cowgirl Queen Contest.

Miller has received numerous awards in the Family & Consumer Sciences, Personal Development, & Communications Divisions of 4-H as well. Her future plans are to attend the University of Iowa to receive a major in business management or marketing.

Logan Zaabel is a 12-year-member of the Jolly Workers 4-H Club, who has experienced success in the cattle, swine and meat goat areas of the Ag and Natural Resource Division of 4-H. Logan has also received awards in the Communications, Horticulture, Science, Mechanics & Engineering Divisions of 4-H. He has been a member of the Jasper County 4-H Meat Judging team and has attended contests at the Iowa State University Meat Labs.

Zaabel plans to attend ISU and major in agriculture and life sciences education. Both students have demonstrated excellent citizenship, leadership and communication skills.
