Trap team competes

SEARSBORO — Eight members of the Newton Trap Team competed in a dual with Pella Monday, shooting skeet and 5-stand sporting clays. The competition was held at the Big Springs Shooting Range.

Allison Ulrey took third place in the women’s senior division in skeet with a score of 31. Clay Trotter was Newton’s highest score in the men’s senior division in skeet. He finished in seventh place with a score of 37.

In the 5-stand sporting clays event, Evan Cook was third in the men’s senior division with a score of 46. Brooke Gifford shot a 44 and Ulrey shot a 41 to place second and third place in the women’s senior division.

“Pella has the facilities and equipment to practice skeet and sporting clays, so they usually have some really good scores in these events,” Newton coach Paul Klein said. “We don’t have the ability to practice these events so we get most of our exposure by going to competitions. Our team members do really good considering this and I’m happy with the scores we’re getting.”

Newton concludes its regular season Saturday in a trap shoot at Big Springs Shooting Range. The Iowa state trap shoot is June 9-11 at Cedar Falls.
