Hawk baseball wins, softball loses at home against Montezuma

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s baseball and softball teams lost their openers on Monday. The Hawk squads were back in action Wednesday at home against Montezuma.

The Hawk baseball team evened its record with a 7-1 victory over the Braves in South Iowa Cedar League action. Junior Josh Dunsbergen pitched a one-hitter for Lynnville-Sully.

Lynnville-Sully’s softball team came up short in its second SICL game of the season. Montezuma edged the Hawk girls, 1-0.

On the Hawk baseball diamond, Lynnville-Sully used a four-run third inning to break a scoreless tie. It was more than enough behind the pitching of Josh Dunsbergen. Dunsbergen kept the Braves scoreless until the seventh inning.

Josh Dunsbergen was charged with the one run on one hit and seven walks. He struck out five. Junior Elijah Collins came on with one out in the top of the seventh and struck out the next two Brave batters to end the game.

Junior Carson Dunsbergen and senior Tyler Van Zante topped the hitting list for the Hawks with a single and a double apiece. Van Zante drove in three runs as did sophomore Rylan James. Rylan James and junior Corbin James each and a single.

Lynnville-Sully had 10 stolen bases against Montezuma. Carson Dunsbergen, senior Caden Dunsbergen and Rylan James swiped two bases apiece.

The Hawk baseball team is 1-1 overall and in conference play. It plays Iowa Christian at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sully.

On the softball diamond, Montezuma chased a run home in the top for the third and was able to hold Lynnville-Sully scoreless. Junior McKinley Conover tripled for the Hawks, but they couldn’t drive her in.

Conover also had a base hit in the game. Freshman Mallory Loftus and eighth-grader Korinne Jansen each had a single.

Eighth-grader Caitlin Alberts started in the pitching circle for the Hawks. She went 4 innings and took the loss, allowing one run on four hits and five walks, She struck out four. Sophomore

Carson Fisk pitched three innings of one-hit, shutout ball. She had one strikeout.

Lynnville-Sully’s softball team (0-2) hosts Pella for a 6 p.m. game Thursday.
