Cardinal girls blank Indians on Senior Night

Five seniors and their parents were honored before Tuesday’s Little Hawkeye Conference soccer match between Newton High’s Cardinals and the Indianola Indians.

Then the seniors led the Class 2A 15th-ranked Cardinals to a 2-0 victory to conclude the regular season. Newton finished at 11-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Newton’s all-time leading scorer senior Ryanne Rausch fired in two first-half goals. The first goal came five minutes into the contest and the second one was at the 25:42 mark.

Senior Ashlee Freese was in goal and handled the few shots on goal the Indians made. She had five saves.

Seniors Courtney Jacobsen and Morgan Allen helped with the defense and senior Taylor Shipley pushed the ball up the field offensively.

Rausch, who reached the 100 career goal mark last week, has 20 goals this season. Freese has 90-plus saves as Newton’s goalkeeper.

The Cardinals await their 2A Region 5 semifinal opponent. Oskaloosa hosts Chariton on Thursday in the opening round of the postseason. The winner plays the Cardinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Newton.

In the other side of the Region 5 bracket, Washington plays at Mount Pleasant Thursday and the winner plays at Pella on Tuesday in the other semifinal. The Region 5 championship game is at 6 p.m. June 5 at Pella.
