Newton Trap Team shoots at Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN — In rainy and windy conditions, Newton Trap Team members competed in a trap shoot on Saturday at Marshalltown.

Newton competed against South Hardin, Hampton-Dumont, AGWSR, Nevada, Dike-New Hartford in a shoot hosted by Central Iowa Straight Shooters.

“The weather conditions really affected scores for everyone participating,” Newton Trap Team coach Paul Klein said of Saturday’s meet.

The varsity squad of Allison Ulrey, Colton Kingery, Nathan Tremel, Devon Hobbs and Brooke Gifford shot a combined score of 169, finishing seventh out of 11 squads. Dallas Schaeffer had the high score for Newton in the male senior varsity division and Grifford was Newton’s top female senior varsity shooter.

Schaeffer broke 45-of-50 clay pigeon targets and finished in a five-way tie for fifth place out of 41 competitors. He was only two birds behind first place, Klein said.

Gifford hit 38 targets to end up in a two-way tie for third place. She finished fourth following a tiebreaker shoot off.

In the senior junior varsity division, Newton’s squad of Daniel Townsend, Jarrett Antle, Malarie Zach, Landon Gearhart and Brodee Vest shot a 166 to take second place out of seven squads. Vest claimed fourth place, hitting 43 targets, in the male senior junior varsity field of 23 shooters.

Newton competed in a skeet and sporting clays shoot Monday at Big Springs Range in Searsboro. It concludes its regular season Saturday in a trap shoot at Big Springs Range. The Iowa state trap shoot is June 9-11 at Cedar Falls.
