K. Michael DePenning, 72, of Newton, died Friday, May 19, 2017, at Accura of Newton West. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 25 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends after the service and burial with a lunch at the Elks Lodge in Newton. Memorials to the American Diabetes Association, Elks Lodge #1270, or the Sacred Heart Catholic Church may be left at the funeral home.

Mike, the son of Roscoe “Skeets” and Bette (Riley) DePenning, was born July 31, 1944, in Newton. Mike graduated from Newton High School in 1962, and from Wentworth Military Academy in 1964. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1965-1969. He later received his four-year degree from Upper Iowa in 1992.

In 1993, Mike was united in marriage with Janice Kay Phipps. Mike was employed at the Maytag Company from 1989-2007, when he retired. Mike was a member and filled several offices at the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1270, serving as Exalted Ruler from 1988-1989. He was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mike as an avid fan of jazz music.

Mike is survived by his daughter, Melissa Brown of Newton; step-son, Travis (Jenny) Herduin of Newton; granddaughters, Madelyn and Grace Brown; step-grandchildren, Joshuwa Kruse and Jacob and Hanna Herduin; and sisters, Connie Riggs and Debbie DePenning, both of Maryville, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice DePenning; and step-daughter, Tammi Herduin.
