PCM’s Boell advances to state golf tournament

PANORA — The Prairie City-Monroe boys’ golf team came up two strokes short of its goal of reaching the state golf tournament as a team, but junior Dayton Boell advanced to the highest level after leading the Mustangs on Friday afternoon.

Boell shot an 83 and was the top scoring golfer not on a qualifying team at the Class 2A district tournament at the par 72 Lake Panorama National Golf Course.

The top two scores from golfers not on qualifying teams advanced to state as individuals. Albia’s Trent Garver and Underwood’s Connor Fink both shot an 84 to also advance to state.

PCM’s team carded a 358 on the day and finished fourth. Host Panorama won the meet with a 331, which allowed a third team to advance to state. Clarinda held off Shenandoah for second place with a 355, but Shenandoah advanced to state with a 356.

Albia (369) was 11 shots back of PCM in fifth, and the rest of the field included Des Moines Christian (370) and Underwood (389).

Boell shot a 41 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine to finish with an 83.

PCM senior Ryan Hill was three shots away from advancing as he finished with an 87, firing a 43 on the front nine and a 44 on the back nine.

The other four Mustangs all had counting scores. Junior Noah Lanphier carded a 92, and juniors Reed Worth, Elijah Sperfslage and Jackson Thomas all fired 96s.

Kolby Shackelford and Will Babcock of Panorama were the top two scorers with a 77 and 78, respectively. George Appleseth of Panorama and Ryan Ruzek and Steve Martin of Shenandoah all shot an 81.

Boell competes in the Class 2A state golf tournament at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge. The first round kicks off at 10:30 a.m. Friday. The second round begins at 8 a.m. Saturday.
