Some important items of business will be before the Newton Community School Board of Education at Monday’s meeting.
The board will consider approval of the new WEST Academy/K-12 Curriculum Director and consider awarding the new Berg Middle School construction project to Hansen Company, Inc.
The opening at WEST came after Mike Moran announced his resignation effective after this school. Moran is taking a position in Urbandale. The NCSD started its process to find a replacement last week with a search committee.
Bidding for the new middle school opened last Thursday, Superintendent Bob Callaghan said. Hansen Company, Inc.’s bid of $27.25 million beat out two other bids. Rochon Corp. of Iowa offered a base bid of $28.34 million, and Stahl Construction Co. bid $27.65 for the project.
The board will also consider approval of the softball project construction documents and authorize FRK Architects and Engineers to receive bids for it. FRK also handled the documents of the new Berg complex.
Construction documents for the re-surfacing of the Newton High School parking lot will also be up for approval on Monday. This action item will include authorizing Bishop Engineering to receive bids for the project.
A public hearing will be set for 6:45 p.m. on June 12 in regard to the NHS parking lot renovation if the board approves.
In other business, NCSD will consider a resolution partnering with the City of Newton and the Department of Natural Resources to support a name change of Sewer Creek to Cardinal Creek. There will also be a discussion on Teacher Leadership Systems featuring Mark Burnett and Ann Nelson.
The board will consider approval of a 2016-2017 budget amendment and of the Central College contract for student teaching for next school year.
During the communications portion of Monday’s meeting, the board will recognize NHS’s Battle of the Books teams, Iowa Reading Corps Awards and state track and field participants.
