Crystal L. Cavegn, 20, of Grinnell, was charged with public intoxication at 10:50 p.m. May 11 after police were called in reference to a suspicious female at 308 W. Third St. S. Cavegn matched the description given by Jasper County Dispatch. She appeared to be agitated and told police she used a narcotic within the last 24 hours but would not identify the narcotic. She refused to complete sobriety testing. Cavegn was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Jason T. Purtilo, 33, of Baxter, was charged with possession of controlled substance, methamphetamine at 10:47 p.m. May 11 after police were checking for a wanted person in Newton. Police found Purtilo at 515 First St. S. lighting a methamphetamine pipe. Purtilo attempted to hide the pipe in the seat cushion. Purtilo was also in possession of a capped syringe and another un-capped syringe. He told police the pipe only had a little residue. Purtilo was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• April A. Wilcox, 38, of Newton, was charged with possession of controlled substance, first offense at 1:10 a.m. Saturday after police located Wilcox on a warrant at 901 S. 13th Ave. E. After placing her in custody, Wilcox was asked if she had anything on her person. Wilcox said she had a pill of Clonazepam in her pocket she was not prescribed. Police located half of a Clonazepam pill. Wilcox was arrested on multiple warrants and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Daniel J. Kern, 57, of Newton, was charged with domestic assault — injury or mental illness at 8:20 p.m. Saturday after police were dispatched to 211 W. Second St. N. in reference to a domestic assault. Police arrived and met with the juvenile victim who said Kern slapped her on her left shoulder. The victim said she had taken raw meat away from Kern to prevent him from getting sick and he slapped her. Police saw red marks on the victim’s left shoulder. Police spoke to Kern who said he was extremely intoxicated. He denied slapping the victim. Kern was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
