Newton takes second at Bos Landen; Mustangs finish fourth

PELLA — The Newton boys’ golf team didn’t have anything on the line Monday at the Pella Christian Invitational at Bos Landen Golf Course.

The Cardinals’ season was going to end no matter how they played. A second-place finish though impressed Newton coach Pat Riley.

“I was overly pleased with how the guys played today. I knew there were a lot of teams and good ones,” Riley said.

“I am just glad to see these young men play their best round of the season. The meet didn’t mean anything but pride to us, and we showed a lot of that today. It was a great ending to our spring season.”

Newton shot a 320 in second place. The Cardinals only trailed Williamsburg, which Riley feels is a Class 3A state title contender. Williamsburg won with a 308.

Prairie City-Monroe also competed and finished fourth. The Mustangs shot a 335, which was five shots behind third-place ADM of Adel.

The rest of the field included Norwalk (339), Pella (348), Bondurant-Farrar (353), Dallas Center-Grimes (354), Oskaloosa (355), Boone (355), Pella Christian (369) and North Mahaska (402).

“We had yet to beat Oskaloosa and we did today by 35 strokes,” Riley said. “We beat Norwalk by 19 strokes and both of those teams beat us at conference. We defeated PCM again and a very solid ADM team.”

Newton had three golfers in the top 10. Seniors Austin Reynolds and Paul Maharry both turned in 77s and tied for fourth.

Maharry shot a 36 on the front nine and a 41 on the back.

Reynolds was one stroke better on the back nine (38) than he was on the front nine (39).

Senior Trey Vanderlaan carded an 81 to finish in ninth.

Junior Shaiden Simmons was the final counting score with an 85. Senior Sam Supino (102) and freshman Damon Reynolds (105) had non-counting scores.

For PCM, junior Dayton Boell finished 10th with an 81, senior Ryan Hill was 14th with an 82 and sophomore Reed Worth ended up 15th with an 83. The final counting score came from junior Jackson Thomas, who turned in an 89.

Juniors Noah Lanphier (90) and Elijah Sperfslage (96) had non-counting scores.

Williamsburg had the top two individual scores on the day. Isaac Knock won medalist honors with a 73, and Sam Buch had a 74 in second.

Oskaloosa’s Spencer Tucker was third with a 76. Williamsburg’s Ethan Jacoby’s 77 tied Maharry and Reynolds.

Newton’s spring season is over. PCM competes in a Class 2A district tournament at Lake Panorama National Golf Course at 10 a.m. Friday in Panora.
