Area girls’ soccer teams learn regional pairings

Newton, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter and Prairie City-Monroe’s girls found out their soccer postseason slots when the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released regional soccer pairings Thursday afternoon.

The 10th-ranked Newton High Cardinals are in Class 2A Region 5 and set on making a return trip to the 2A state tournament. CMB’s Raiders are in Class 2A Region 4. The PCM Mustangs are in Class 1A Region 7.

Newton (7-3) and No. 2 Pella were awarded first-round byes in Region 5. The two Little Hawkeye Conference rivals host semifinal games at 6 p.m. on May 30.

In Class 2A Region 5, Oskaloosa (5-5), another LHC team, plays Chariton (9-3) in a 6 p.m. first-round game on May 25 at Oskaloosa. The winner plays at Newton. Mount Pleasant (1-7) hosts Washington (0-7) at 6 p.m. May 25 and the winner plays at Pella.

The 2A Region 5 championship game is at 6 p.m. June 5 at Pella.

CMB (3-6) opens Class 2A Region 4 action at 6 p.m. May 25 at Dallas Center-Grimes. The winning team plays at 6 p.m. May 30 at No. 6 Norwalk (11-2). Norwalk is slated to host the Region 4 title game at 6 p.m. June 5.

Also in Region 4, Des Moines Hoover plays at Winterset in a 6 p.m. opening-round game on May 25. The winner plays a 6 p.m. semifinal game on May 30 at Perry (8-3).

PCM (0-9) plays a Class 1A Region 7 opening-round game at 14th-ranked Pella Christian at 6 p.m. May 30 in Pella. The winning team takes on the winner of Bondurant-Farrar (5-4) and Knoxville (4-6), which play at 6 p.m. May 30. The semifinal game is at 6 p.m. June 2 at Pella Christian.

Class 1A fifth-ranked Center Point-Urbana (9-1) earned a first-round bye in the Region 7 tournament. It awaits the winner of the Vinton-Shelsburg (2-8) and Benton (3-8) game which is slated for 6 p.m. on May 30 at Vinton. The semifinal game is at 5 p.m. June 2 at Center Point.

The Class 1A Region 7 championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m. June 5 at Center Point’s Fross Park.

Regional champions advance to the IGHSAU state soccer tournament June 8-10 at Cownie Sports Complex in Des Moines.
