Food for Fines begins Monday at Newton library

Food for Fines

May 15-20 — Pay down your fines with food. During the week of May 15 the library will waive overdue material fines in exchange for a food donation. Food will not be accepted as payment for missing or damaged material replacement fees. Donations must be canned or otherwise non-perishable food items. All donations will go directly to the Jasper County Community Food Bank. One food item will be considered equal to $1 in library overdue fines. Yoga at the Library

6 p.m. Monday — Certified yoga instructor, Meghan Davis, leads and introductory class for adults. No prior experience necessary. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 641-792-4108 to register.

Iowa's Hidden Treasures
with Dan Kaercher

6 p.m. May 18 — Dan Kaercher, retired editor-in-chief of Midwest Living Magazine and former Iowa Public Television host, spent years traveling in almost every one of Iowa’s 99 counties in search of close-to-home attractions and getaways to share with his loyal readers and viewers. Historic sites, parks, natural wonders, quaint small towns, big-city attractions, museums and eateries galore. You’ll be amazed to learn what surprises you don’t know await right in your own backyard — Iowa.

Tech Time

3 to 4:30 p.m. May 24 — Do you have tech questions? We can help. Make an appointment for one-on-one help with downloading library ebooks, audiobooks, or music to your tablet or mobile device. Call 641-792-4108 to reserve a time slot.

Summer Reading
Kick-Off Picnic

4 to 7 p.m., June 1 — Summer Reading starts June 1. Bookworms of all ages are invited to visit the library and register for the library’s Summer Reading program and events. A free hotdog picnic for children will be provided on the lawn, while supplies last. All children who register will receive a plastic book bag and a summer reading book log to keep track of the books they read. This is the first opportunity to register for youth summer reading events.

Adult Coloring

6 p.m. June 5 — Relax and unwind with a coloring book. All materials provided, adults only please.

Memoir Writing Workshop

5 p.m. June 7 — Published author, Gail Kittleson, helps budding writers develop tools and themes for writing their memoirs in this interactive workshop. Feel free to bring your writing questions. This is a great program for writers looking to publish their writing, as well as those who want to preserve their life story for future generations. Call 641-792-4108 to register.
