• Robert E. Taylor, 56, of Des Moines, was charged with possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license under suspension at 11:15 p.m. Friday after police stopped Taylor in the 100 block of East 17th Street South for driving with a suspended license.Taylor was taken into custody for driving under suspension. Officers located two syringes which contained heroin and a silver cylindrical container, which contained a baggy with 0.1 gram of a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine. Taylor was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Julie L. Schrader, 33, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 5:35 p.m. Friday after police were called to Hy-Vee in reference to a shoplifter. Schrader is accused of taking $98 worth of groceries and beauty products and attempted to leave the store without paying for them. Schrader told police she had no means of paying for the items. Schrader was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
