Cardinal boys claim LHC victory on Senior Night

Newton High’s boys recorded a Little Hawkeye Conference tennis dual victory on Senior Night on Thursday. The Cardinals defeated Oskaloosa, 7-4.

The Cardinals were up 4-2 after the singles matches. They won the No. 2, 3 and 4 doubles matches to win their first conference dual to end the regular season dual play.

Newton (3-7) ended LHC play 1-4 and head into Monday’s Little Hawkeye Conference tournament. The conference tournament begins at 10 a.m. Monday at Norwalk.

Playing on their home courts for the final time for Newton were seniors Reid Miller, Seamus Vandemore, Nick VerSteeg, Nathan Warren and Alex Miller. VerSteeg won his No. 6 singles match 6-3, 6-2 over Oskaloosa’s Brad Klucas.

VerSteeg and junior Grant Hamand combined for a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Sam Carmichael and Klucas. Reid Miller and sophomore Brady Eberline claimed a win at No. 2 doubles 4-6, 6-3 (10-8) against Nick Harrington and Nick Reiter.

Vandemore dropped a third-set tiebreaker to Oskaloosa’s Harrington 6-4, 6-7 (10-6) at No. 1 singles. Reid Miller lost 7-5, 6-4 to Cade Snakenberg at No. 2 singles.

Winning single matches for Newton were Eberline 7-6, 4-6 (12-10) over Colton Stout at No. 3, Hemann 6-1, 6-0 over Reiter at No. 4 and Hamand 2-6, 6-3 (10-7) over Carmichael.

Newton’s Alex Miller and Warren dropped a third-set tiebreaker in the No. 6 doubles match. Oskaloosa’s Carson Milledge and Mark Deronde won 6-4, 4-6 (12-10). Vandemore and Hemann lost 6-4, 7-5 to Oskaloosa’s Snakenberg and Stout.

Newton’s sophomore Grant Freese and junior Devon Ban Brogen won the No. 4 doubles match, winning 6-1, 3-6 (10-2) over Jaidyn Barnes and Payton Bandy.
