Area track and field teams find success at PCM Boys Classic

MONROE — Four area boys’ track and field programs competed in the PCM Boys Track Classic on Thursday. And all three teams placed in the top three in the team standings.

Lynnville-Sully and Colfax-Mingo went 1-2 in the Class B standings, and host Prairie City-Monroe and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter were 2-3 in the Class A standings. The Mustangs and Raiders were separated by just two points.

The Hawks won eight events, scored double points in both individual hurdle events and won three relays in scoring 177 points to win Class B. Colfax-Mingo won twice, scored a good chunk of its points from field events and ended up with a season-high 140 points in second. The rest of the Class B standings included Sigourney (112), Wayne (108), Keota (80), Melcher-Dallas (59) and the PCM JV (31).

East Marshall, PCM and CMB were separated by six points in the Class A standings. East Marshall was the victor with 135 points. PCM won five events and scored 133 in second. CMB claimed nine top-three performances to finish third with 131points.

The rest of the Class A field included Montezuma (106), West Marshall (81), Pleasantville (74) and North Mahaska (66).

Five of the Hawks’ wins came from individual events.

Junior Corey McCoy won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 5.87 seconds, junior Tyson Vander Linden hit the finish line first in the 400 with a time of 52.44.

The Hawks went 1-2 in the 100 high hurdles with senior Ryan Hofer and junior Gage Vander Leest. Hofer won the event in 15.59, and Vander Leest crossed the line in 15.94.

The 1-2 finish continued in the 400 hurdles. Juniors Brevin Hansen and Carson Dunsbergen finished the race in 56.32 and 1:01.66, respectively.

Dunsbergen also was second in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches.

Sophomore Rylan James won the shot put with a throw of 45-0.

Junior Josh Dunsbergen was the runner-up in both the 1,600 and 3,200. Sophomore Nate Stock was third in the 200.

The Hawks won the 4x400, 4x800 and the distance medley relays. In the 4x400, the team of Vander Leest, Vander Linden, Carson Dunsbergen and McCoy finished in 3:43.30.

The 4x800 team included Hansen, Jones, Ehresman and Cody Gibbs, and they finished in 9:07.71.

Vander Leest, junior Colten Arment, senior Caden Dunsbergen and Hofer won the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:03.49.

The 4x200 and 4x100 relays also scored points. The 4x200 included Caden Dunsbergen, Kemper Lukehart, James and Stock and they finished second in 1:41.06. The 4x100 team of Caden Dunsbergen, Kemper Lukehart, James and Stock finished third.

The Tigerhawks went 1-2 in the discus, junior Reegan Van Dyke won the high jump and took second the long jump. Colfax-Mingo scored double points in the long jump with sophomore Ethan Summy collecting a third-place finish.

Junior Colten Lourens won the discus with a throw of 124-3, Van Dyke won the high jump with a leap of 5-10. Senior Jimmy Camp added a second-place finish in both the shot put and discus.

Senior Adam Teed was third overall in 55.6.

The distance medley relay team of Nathan Evans, Will Dunsbergen, Cauy Fitch and junior Alex Lewis finished second.

Three other relays placed in the top three.

Colfax-Mingo did not have sophomores Holister Koenig and Zarek Hill. Both athletes were held out to rest some nagging injuries.

All five wins by PCM were in individual events. Senior Chris Ellens won the 1,600 and 3,200, sophomore Cole Dustin claimed victory in the 110 high hurdles and junior Noah Anderson sprinted to a win in the 200.

Senior Noah Clark won the discus and finished second in the shot put. He added two more feet to his personal-best shot put toss with a mark of 49-6 1/2. Dustin finished third in the high jump. Senior Gabe Stover finished third in the Class B discus with a throw of 114-8.

The 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams finished second. The 4x100 foursome included Peyton Strover, sophomore Preston Van Wyk, Brayton Van Dyke and Anderson, and they finished in 46.0. The 4x200 team of Strover, Henkenius, Noah Hirayama and Van Wyk finished in 1:36.58.

The final two top-three finishes came in the shuttle hurdle relay and the 4x400.

PCM senior Luke Greiner and sophomore Jarron Trausch missed their second straight meet. Administrators at the school were contacted, but they are not commenting on their absences.

The Raiders’ best finish was second by Joe Keeling. Keeling and Ben Gunderson were 2-3 in the 400 hurdles, freshman Logan Berg finished third both the 1,600 and 3,200 and sophomore Will Clapper finished third in both the shot put and discus.

The 4x800 relay and distance medley were both third for the Raiders. The 4x800 relay included junior Noah Rhoades, junior Max Van Maanen, Senior Evan Bianchi and Cheville. The distance medley relay team was third and it included senior John Newton, senior Zach Schafer, Ben Huff and Rhoades.

CMB competed in the meet without the services of juniors Marcus Mitchell and Carter Fricke. Mitchell was held out due to injury, and Fricke was attending a CMB boys soccer game.
