Dodd, Roush strike gold at Tiger Relays

GRINNELL — Newton High’s boys had a good warm-up meet for their 4x100-meter relay team for Friday’s Drake Relays and for the Cardinals going into Tuesday’s Little Hawkeye Conference track meet. The Cardinals placed third in Thursday’s Grinnell boys’ Tiger Relays.

Mount Pleasant ran away from the field of seven other teams with 192 points for the team title. Then came three LHC teams with Pella in second place with 133 points, Newton in third with 121 and Grinnell in fourth at 95 points.

Knoxville placed fifth with 70 points. Taking sixth was BGM with 46 points followed by South Tama with 39 points and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont with 26 points.

The Cardinal 4x100 relay team of Jeremiah Johnson, Jaron Roush, Connor Gholson and Matthew Karsten finished second in 45.08 seconds. The foursome runs at 6:05 p.m. Friday at the Drake Relays in Des Moines.

Brennen Dodd posted his best time this season in winning the 400 meters in 52.07 seconds. Teammate Jack Callaghan was second in 53.73 seconds. Callaghan took third in the 800 in 2 minutes, 5.78 seconds with Dodd in eighth at 2:10.35, but scoring seventh-place team points.

Roush claimed gold in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.85 seconds. Dylan Farver was fourth in true 400 hurdles in 1:03.27. The two combined with Cody Satterfield and Keith Steinbach for second place in the shuttle hurdle relay race in 1:05.66.

In the 200 meters, Gholson ran third in 23.85 seconds and Johnson was fifth in 24.57 seconds. Karsten placed third in the 100 meters in 11.88 seconds.

Gholson and Steinbach went second and third in the long jump for the Cardinals. Gholson had a season’s-best leap of 20 feet, 11 1/2 inches and Steinbach’s distance was 19-7.

Finishing second in the discus was Jace Lukefahr with a throw of 129-2. In the shot put, Caden Manning inched out teammate Landon Hansen, 41-5 to 41-6, as the two went fifth and sixth, respectively.

Newton 1,600-meter distance medley relay team of Logan Cummins, Dalton Altemeir, Camden Winther and Noah Sander placed third in 4:03.91. The sprint medley relay team of Josh Miravalles, Spencer Elbert, Johnson and Winther finished fourth in 1:43.30.

Adam Hunter ran fifth in the 3,200 meters in 11:05.65. Sander placed eighth in the 1,600 in 5:04.70.

The 4x200 relay team of Thomas Cox, Satterfield, Elbert and Farver was eighth in 1:46.18. The 4x800 relay team of Dylan Main, Blake Robson, Skyler Tool and Chad Nolin posted a time of 10:04.51 for ninth, but earned eighth-place team points.

Newton prepares for the Little Hawkeye Conference meet, which starts at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, on the same track it just competed on — Grinnell.
