Coyle leads Newton girls at Linda Bloom Invitational

MARSHALLTOWN — Lizzy Coyle pulled out her best 18-hole score in leading Newton High’s Cardinal girls to 10th place at Thursday’s Marshalltown Linda Bloom Invitational at Marshalltown’s American Legion Memorial Golf Course.

Coyle, a senior, shot a 95 on rounds of 45 and 50 to tie for 21st overall. Junior Alyana Reynolds carded a 98 (51-47) for 28th.

“Lizzy had a very consistent round of 18 holes today. She was able to stay out of trouble,” Newton head coach Scott Enyart said. “She had three pars on her first six holes, and she was striking the ball better than she did on Tuesday at home.”

Enyart said Reynolds had two pars on the day, but had three holes which jumped up and got her. He said she finished strong with five straight bogeys. Enyart said Reynolds stuck with her routine, and played aggressively, but smart.

Ankeny Centennial’s Tenley Morettii was the meet medalist with a 74 on back-to-back rounds of 37. Waukee’s Brooke Boardman was runner-up with a 77 (39-38).

Waukee claimed the team title with a 342 and Ankeny Centennial was second at 351. Nevada followed with a 363 and Grinnell was fourth at 368. Mason City took fifth with a 369 followed by Southeast Polk at 383, Marshalltown at 385, Des Moines Roosevelt at 415 and Grundy Center in ninth at 426.

Newton finished with a 429 four-player score to take 10th. Norwalk placed 11th at 430 followed by Ottumwa at 434, Ames at 460 and Fort Dodge at 522.

“It was a cold, blustery day and the greens were a little rough,” Enyart said. “We took steps in the right direction from the lessons we learned on the golf course.”

Junior Taylor Dydell shot a 109 (55-54), tying for 49th overall. Enyart said Dydell struggled on the greens with a lot of three putts. Freshman Jordon Pritchard finished with a personal-best 127 (69-58) for 18 holes, which tied her for 74th. Enyart said Pritchard hit the ball more consistently on her back nine holes of the tournament

The non-team scoring golfers for Newton Thursday were junior Tory Church with a 133 (75-58), and sophomore Arieal Lum with a 141 (70-71). It was Lum’s first official varsity meet. Senior Erin Van Sickle shot a 151 (75-76).

Newton prepares for the Little Hawkeye Conference meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Indianola.
