PCM finishes second, Colfax-Mingo fifth at EBF

EDDYVILLE — Prairie City-Monroe senior Noah Clark competed at the state track meet last year in the discus.

As we approach the postseason in 2017, Clark appears to be figuring out the shot put, too.

Clark won the discus Tuesday and turned in a three-foot personal-best toss that gave him a runner-up finish in the shot put, and the Mustangs finished second in the Rocket Relays.

PCM scored 118 points but trailed champion Pekin by 70. Montezuma finished third with 104.5 points, North Mahaska was fourth with 68 and Colfax-Mingo placed fifth with 44 points, The rest of the field included Pella Christian (42), host EBF (14) and Van Buren (10.5).

Clark’s winning throw in the discus covered 143 feet, 9 inches. He was second in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 47-2. His previous best throw in the event was a little more than 44 feet.

The other two wins for the Mustangs came in the shuttle hurdle relay and the 110-meter high hurdles.

Sophomore Cole Dustin won the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.85 seconds. He also anchored the shuttle hurdle relay team to a win. That foursome of sophomores Preston Van Wyk, Nick Dredge, Nick Buswell and Dustin finished in 1:04.84.

The Mustangs finished in second in four events.

Besides Clark in the shot put, senior Chris Ellens was the runner-up in the 1,600, junior Noah Anderson finished second in the 200 and the distance medley relay took second with a season-best time.

Anderson’s time in the 200 was 23.59. Ellens finished the mile in a personal-best time of 4:42.26.

Both Anderson and Ellens were part of the distance medley relay. Van Wyk opened the event followed by Anderson, junior Noah Henkenius and Ellens, and that foursome finished in a season-best time of 3:51.27.

PCM took third in two individual events and two relays.

Dustin was third in the high jump with a leap of 5-6 and sophomore Wes Cummings placed third in the 400 with a season-best time of 55.61.

The 4x100 and 4x200 both finished third. The 4x100 team included sophomore Peyton Strover, Van Wyk, sophomore Brayton Van Dyke and Anderson, and that group finished in 46.29. The 4x200 included freshman Noah Hirayama, Van Dyke, Strover and Henkenius and they finished in 1:38.30.

The Tigerhawks were led by juniors Colton Lourens and Reegan Van Dyke.

Lourens was second in the discus with a personal-best throw of 127-3.

Van Dyke was the runner-up in the high jump with a leap of 5-8.

The other top-three finish came in the 4x400. That team included Van Dyke, senior Adam Teed and sophomores Ethan Summy and Zarek Hill. They finished in a season-best time of 3:43.67.

Colfax-Mingo competes at the PCM boys meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Monroe.
