Mustang boys win home golf tourney

MONROE — The Prairie City-Monroe boys’ golf team was locked in at their home course Monday during the annual Mustang Invitational.

Five PCM golfers finished in the top seven and the sixth golfer was 11th as the Mustangs cruised to the team title with a 319 at Gateway Recreation Golf Course. Boone (336) was 17 shots back in second, and Grinnell was third with a 337.

Sophomore Reed Worth was the top Mustang golfer for the first time this season. He finished in the runner-up position with a 6-over-par 78.

Senior Ryan Hill had his best score of the season with a 79, which put him in fourth overall. Juniors Jackson Thomas (80), Dayton Boell (82) and Noah Lanphier (82) placed fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. The final Mustang golfer, sophomore Andrew Van Ryswyk, finished 11th with a non-counting 84.

Grinnell’s Lucas Scherf earned medalist honors with an even par 72. Teammate Brady Ellis finished third with a 78. Boone had two golfers in the top 10 — Tanner Schminke (82) and Ben Wagner (83).

There were seven teams in the field. Finishing after Grinnell in fourth was Des Moines Christian with a 353. Chariton (361), Bondurant-Farrar (367) and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (418) rounded out the standings.

The Mustangs play at noon Thursday at The Preserve on Rathbun Lake in Moravia. The Heart of Iowa Conference meet starts at 9 a.m. on Tuesday at Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.
