NHS girls compete in Tiger Relays

GRINNELL — Changing things up a bit, Newton High’s coaches Rachelle Tipton and Rachel Tomas liked what they saw from the Cardinal girls on the track at Tuesday’s Grinnell Girls’ Tiger Relays.

“The girls did a really nice job tonight with the back-to-back meets. We also tried some new things and they responded well,” Tipton said.

Newton competed in Monday’s Dowling Catholic Invitational then moved right into Tuesday’s Tiger Relays. The Cardinal girls finish up their three-meet week Thursday at Pella.

Pella won the Tiger Relays with 184 points with Southeast Polk in second with 125 points. Grinnell racked up 106 points for third. Oskaloosa was fourth with 77 points followed by Williamsburg with 62 points and Newton in sixth with 26 points.

On the track, the top performance for Newton was by Morgann Eide in the 400-meter hurdles. She finished fourth in 1 minute, 12.85 seconds. Liz McVey placed sixth in the 100 high hurdles in 17.38 seconds.

“One of those we asked to run a new event was Morgann in the 400 hurdles. She got out strong and pushed well at the end even though she was tiring. She will see those again,” Tipton said. “Liz had a great run in the 100 hurdles. She looked smooth and sailed to a personal best time.”

The best placing of the night was by Ali Bestell in the discus. She had a throw of 104 feet, 7 1/2 inches for second place.

Newton had several events where it placed sixth in scoring but further down overall. Haley Revell took seventh in the discus at 95-2 and shot put at 35-5 1/2, but earned sixth—place team points in each event.

The Cardinals’ sprint medley relay team of Kenna Winther, Randi Walters, Karley Leiker and Rachel Berkland ran fifth in 2:02.16. Also taking fifth was the 4x800 relay foursome of Lakin Jenkins, Brittney McConnell, Gerima Blair and Molly Coy in 11:26.61.

Newton’s 4x100 relay team of McVey, Lucas, Berkland and Alivia Whitten was sixth in 55.93. Earning sixth-place points but finishing seventh was the Newton 4x400 relay team of Leiker, Andrea Brown, Jenkins and McConnell in 4:48.66.

Doing the same in the 1,600-meter distance medley relay race was the foursome of Serenity Steir, Brown, Rheagan Oldfield and Jenna Smith in 5:20.22. The 4x200 relay team of Leiker, Bergland, Winther and Teddie Brunsmann was eighth in 2:00.07 but scored sixth-place points.
