Newton places sixth at Oskaloosa

OSKALOOSA — Newton High’s Cardinal boys finished in the middle of the pack at Tuesday’s 13-team field of the 2017 Oskaloosa Invitational. The 18-hole golf tournament was played at Edmunsen Golf Course.

Williamsburg was the tournament champion with a 310, and Mount Pleasant was second with 313. Winterset took third with a 320 and Washington had a 326 for fourth.

Newton beat four of the other five Little Hawkeye Conference teams in the field.

Host Oskaloosa placed fifth with a 327 followed by Newton with a 331. In seventh was Pella at 333 followed by Norwalk at 336 and Pella Christian in eighth at 344. Grinnell was 11th at 348, one stroke behind Burlington Notre Dame (347).

“I thought we played pretty well considering how we started off. It took a few holes for the guys to figure out the greens weren’t holding, and they needed to leave it short and let it bounce/roll on,” Newton head coach Pat Riley said. “Wind played a factor in this one for everyone.”

Fairfield placed 12th with a four-man total of 367. Sigourney was 13th with a 370.

Newton senior Austin Reynolds tied for sixth overall with a 76. Senior Trey Vanderlaan and junior Shaiden Simmons each carded an 83 for Newton. Senior Paul Maharry recorded an 89.

“It was nice to see Shaiden come through big for us. He needed a good round to boost his confidence,” Riley said.

Freshman Damon Reynolds finished with a 91 followed by junior Evan Walker with a 97. Senior Sam Supino and junior Nate Vanzee each carded a 98 to round out all of Newton’s golfers for the day.

Newton goes into Monday’s Little Hawkeye Conference meet ready to defend its 2016 title. The tournament tees off at 9 a.m. at Beaver Creek Golf course in Grimes.

“We really need to get focused for our conference tournament coming up Monday. If we play like I know we can, we will bring home the conference tournament trophy for the second year in a row,” Riley said.
