Newton girls beat PC in LHC tennis dual

Winning four singles matches in Tuesday’s home tennis dual with Pella Christian, Newton High’s girls knew they had to collect at least two victories in the doubles matches to win. The Cardinals got what they needed, winning 6-5 over the Eagles in Little Hawkeye Conference play.

Doubles’ wins were not easy for either team. All five matches went to third-set tiebreakers.

Newton’s Megan Pressgrove and Bethany Baumgartner defeated PC’s Andrea Carballo and Morgan Bush 6-1, 5-7 (10-6) in the No. 1 doubles match. Rylie Bakalar and Katie Suttek combined for a 6-3, 5-7 (10-1) victory for Newton over Hannah DeBruin and Brooke Van Woerkon at No. 5 doubles.

Pressgrove beat Carballo 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Baumgartner ran her LHC singles record to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jaden Joy Morgan at No. 3 singles. Baumgartner is 6-1 overall.

Katherine Thorpe netted a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Pella Christian’s Morgan Bush. Newton’s Kinzie Loree collected a 6-2, 4-6 (10-4) No. 5 singles win over Erica Van Soelen.

Pella Christian’s Cassidy Bush beat Newton’s Natalie Camp 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. At No. 6 singles, the Eagles’ Sophie Vander Molen pulled out a 6-4, 4-6 (10-6) win over Harlie Durr.

Morgan and Van Soelen defeated Thorpe and Loree 3-6, 6-3 (10-5) at No. 2 doubles. C. Bush and Vander Molen beat Newton’s Camp and Durr 6-3, 4-6 (11-9) at No. 3 doubles.

Newton’s Emily Valtman and Alexis Hoffman battled at No. 4 doubles but lost. Pella Christian’s Sharlee Fopma and Hanna Van Sant won 5-7, 6-4 (10-8).

Newton (4-3) improved to 3-1 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. The Cardinals play at 4:15 p.m. Thursday in a conference dual at Indianola.
